Biography
Joe Tougas was a professor of philosophy and fine arts at The Evergreen State College from 1999 to 2018, as an adjunct, a visiting professor, and a full-time professor. Tougas recieved his BA from The Evergreen State College in 1984 and went on to recieve his MA and PhD in Philosophy from the University of California, Irvine in 1994 and 1998. Tougas served as a member of the Diversity and Equity Committee as well as the Campus Grievance Officer. Some of his work was featured in the Evergreen Visual Art's faculty and staff exhibition 'Finish.' Before becoming a full professor of philosophy at the Evergreen State College, he was a painter and storyteller in Olympia, WA. As an artist his focus was on scultping, primarily wood. His artwork has been featured at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, WA as well as Yashiro, Japan, and Olympia, WA.
