Historical Note

Records for the Learning Resource Center began in 1979, with the beginning of Stella Jordan’s role as coordinator. The LRC began in 1977 as the Center for the Development of Reading and Writing Skills, and changed to the Learning Resource Center in 1981. A staff member evaluation of Stella indicates that she was responsible for creating a unified and consistent structure in the LRC from “a program that had varied its focus and rules of operation from year to year.” Tom Maddox became the Center's coordinator likely in 1988 and certainly by 1991, while Stella continued as its manager. Records from 1979-2000 are Stella's, and show the LRC involved Stella providing one-on-one conferences with students to develop their writing skills, either through or in conjunction with writing courses, as well as a staff of tutors/ aides who Stella oversaw. Tom Maddox left the college in 1999. In the 1999-2000 academic year, Olivia Archibald was the interm coordinator. Stella Jordan retired in 2000. In the 2000-2001 academic year, Don Foran was the Center's coordinator, with Del Beaudry as an assistant.

In 2000-2001, George Dimitroff was the coordinator of math tutoring in the LRC. The Center may have offered math tutoring in some form before this. In 2001, the LRC separated into two distinct entities: the Writing Center, providing tutoring in writing, and the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center (or QuaSR), providing tutoring in math and science, though the two Centers continue to share the "Learning Resource Center" umbrella. Sandra Yannone came in as director of the Writing Center in 2001, while Louis Nadelson came in as director of the QuaSR. In 2003, Louis left the college and Vauhn Foster-Grahler came in as director.

Arrangement

This fonds is divided into two records groups: Learning Resource Center (LRC) 1979-2000 and LRC: Writing Center 2000-2015. The records are further organized into subgroups according to who was acting as director or the primary conductor of services. Under the Learning Resource Center are subgroups for Stella Jordan (1979-2000), represented by the series Statistics, Tutoring Mateirals, Curricular Materials, and Evaluations and Student Papers, and Don Foran (2000-2001). Under LRC: Writing Center is subgroup Sandra Yannone (2001-), represented by the series Center Operations, Annual Reports, Workgroups, and Publications.

Currently there are no records for the QuaSR Center (Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center), but another subgroup will be added as "LRC: QuaSR Center" with an assession of their records. The records are further arranged by the director or primary conductor of services.
