Biographical / Historical

John Cushing attended Reed University for his undergraduate degree in the early ‘60s before completing his PhD at Brown University. From there, Cushing took a computing job at Cornell University and was the director of the PLATO IV Project. PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) was the first generalized computer-assisted instruction system and the Plato IV Project was a special terminal that was equipped with touch capability and other improved features and which yielded two notable music projects.

Cushing joined Evergreen in 1976 as the director of computer services, acting as a Chair of the Emerging Technology Learning Group, and later joined the faculty where he taught classes such as The Semantic Web Colloquium with fellow faculty members Judy Cushing and Brian Walter. John Cushing retired in 2007.
