Biographical / Historical
S.R. (Rudy) Martin became a founding faculty member of The Evergreen State College (TESC) in 1970-1971 where he helped design Evergreen's experimental and interdisciplinary arts and sciences curriculum. After nomination from faculty peers, Rudy was selected to serve as academic dean for TESC from 1973-1976. During this time, he led reorganization efforts for the college library, academic clerical staff, as well as monitored academic programs, personnel, budgets, and physical resources. Other titles and notable committees that Rudy took part in while at TESC were Non-white Task Force (1974), Dean Selection Task Force (1978-1979), Faculty Hiring Task Force (1988-90 and 1979-80), Presidential Search Committee (1983-1984), and the Strategic Planning Subcommittee on the College's Values and Aspirations. From 1971-1997, Rudy was a professor of American and African-American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Philosophy and Rhetoric, Humanities and Social Sciences, Labor Studies, Expressive Arts, Masters Program in Public Administration, and Writing. Upon his retirement in 1997, Rudy was awarded the title of Evergreen Faculty Member Emeritus. Rudy received an Associate's degree from Monterey Peninsula College in General Education (1955), his BA from UC Berkeley in English Literature (1957), his MA from CSU San Fransisco in English Literaure (1961), and his PhD from WSU, Pullman in American Studies (1974). Rudy often wrote fictional stories about Black life in the Western U.S. His most well known books are his family memoir, "On the Move: A Black Family's Western Saga" (2009) , his first novel, "Natural-Born Proud: A Revery" (2010), story collection, "Seaside Stories" (2011).
