José Gómez papers
Scope and Contents
The José Gómez papers collection contains materials from his work at The Evergreen State College (1966-2014). The collection also includes documents relating to his personal work with the United Farm Workers, César Chávez, Harvard, and La Raza Centro Legal. The United Farm Workers materials include two video cassettes: 'Realizing Cesar Chavez's Dream (Realizando el Sueno de Cesar Chavez)' the English version of "No Grapes." His personal papers also include his biography, FBI dossier, curriculam vitae, and personal correspondence. The second series of the collection documenting his deanship from 1990-1995.

Biographical / Historical
Before becoming a faculty member at Evergreen, José Gómez (1943-2014) founded the Committee on Gay Legal Issues (COGLI) at Harvard Law School, and acted as an executive assistant to César Chávez, president of the United Farm Workers. Gómez was also the first openly gay candidate elected to the national board of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1983, as well as the Executive Director of the Human Rights Foundation in San Francisco. Starting in 1983, he served as Executive Director of the La Raza Centro Legal in San Francisco before joining Evergreen in 1988 as a dean. He served as dean from 1988-1996 after which he joined the Evergreen faculty and taught law at the college until his death in 2014.
